Niraj Nathwani

Niraj Nathwani is member of the Agency’s Technical Assistance and Capacity Building Unit. His areas of expertise with respect to FRA's work Include: freedom of thought, conscience and religion; freedom of expression; refugee law; data protection. He previously worked as an associate attorney In Austria. He began working for the predecessor of FRA, the EUMC, in 2000.
He studied law in Vienna and defended his PhD at the European University Institute in Florence. His PhD thesis was published in 2003 by Brill as volume 7 of its Refugees and Human Rights Series under the title ‘Rethinking Refugee Law’. He has also authored a number of articles including: ‘The Purpose of Asylum’, International Journal of Refugee Law Vol. 12/3 (2000), 'Islamic Headscarves and Human Rights', Netherlands Quarterly of Human Rights Vol. 25/2 (June 2007), 'Religious Cartoons and Human Rights', European Human Rights Law Review 4/2008, and 'Freedom of expression and religious feelings', in Yearbook of Muslims in Europe, Vol. 1/2009.
